Please Come: A Psalm for the Brokenhearted

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. – Psalm 34:18

David: A Man After God’s Own Heart

David is often remembered as a king, a warrior, a man of victory. But before he was crowned, before he was celebrated, David was a psalmist, a man who poured his unfiltered heart out before God.
What made David “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14) was not moral perfection or emotional strength. It was honesty. David brought his whole self to God, his fear, shame, rage, despair, longing, and hope, without pretending any of it wasn’t there.

The Psalms are filled with David’s raw laments. He did not sanitize his pain for God. He did not hide his trembling, his confusion, or his sense of abandonment. Instead, he sang them. David knew what it was to feel hunted, unsafe, misunderstood, and alone. He knew what it was to cry out from caves, from sleepless nights, from the weight of his own failures. Again and again, his prayers echo this same desperate question:

Where are You, God? I need You.

Psalm 34 was written by David during one of the most vulnerable moments of his life; when he was fleeing for his life and felt utterly undone. Yet in that broken place, David discovered something sacred: God does not turn away from crushed spirits. He draws near.

David’s psalms remind us that faith is not the absence of pain but rather the decision to bring our pain into God’s presence.

When we come honestly before God, we are praying as David did:
not hiding our wounds,
not performing strength,
but trusting that God meets us in our collapse.

And He always does.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

You are the One who draws near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Thank You that we do not have to hide our pain or pretend to be strong before You. Like David, we can come honestly, bringing our fears, our questions, and the wounds we carry.

When our hearts feel overwhelmed and our prayers sound like desperate cries, remind us that You are listening. Meet us in the quiet places, in the hidden places of our lives, and in the moments when we feel most undone.

Teach us to trust that Your presence is near, even when we cannot feel it. Hold the parts of our hearts that are weary and restore the hope that suffering has tried to steal.

May our prayers, like David’s psalms, rise honestly before You. And may we rest in the promise that You never turn away from those who seek You with open and humble hearts.

In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
